Whenever a client sees the Nine of Swords, they inevitably take in a breath that has a slight shake to it. This is understandable as the dark background doesn’t lend itself to much optimism. Additionally, the NINE swords emblazoned across the card like a looming presence can make anyone uncomfortable.
There are so many meanings for this card: loss of hope, nightmares, depression, legal or medical problems, emotional distress, misery, and/or desperation. It’s really hard to understand what this card is trying to tell us without the analysis of the cards that surround it.
In one instance, a male client came to see me regarding an issue in his life. When I laid out the cards, it revealed that while he was going through some severe depression at the moment, it was much needed because from there he would move into some healing that would transform his life (Death). The cards also revealed that he would be entering a prosperous time.
I’ve been through some dark times but I’ve experienced joy too. Now that joy can’t be suppressed. – Michelle Shocked
Later, he revealed to me that he was mourning the loss of a bad business deal. He invested his time and money into a business deal that he felt would bring great financial reward. It turned out that he made some poor choices and lost quite a bit of that money. Since then, he hasn’t been able to recover from those poor choices.
I threw some cards down to explore some immediate action he could take that would help him move towards a more positive direction. Spirit stepped in and urged him to take some time to rest (Four of Swords) and to seek the help of a mentor who would be able to help him navigate the complex waters of the business world.
