Before you read this piece, find a sheet of paper (Yes, we are going to do this old school) and a pencil/pen. Every fifteen minutes jot down your thoughts:
Now, I am going to ask you to something very out of the ordinary. Out of the ordinary is good as it gets you out of your comfort zone. Stand still and look at the thoughts you jotted down. As the thoughts come through your head, share them with me. Unfiltered. What thoughts fill your head? Are they positive or negative?
Go back to your chart and revisit your notes. Circle the ones that are positive and place a check next to the negative. This will give you a better idea of where you are in your thought process. If you do this exercise, you’ll see where you are and where you need to go. If your thoughts are more negative, rather than running from that and feeling terrible, find a way to turn it into a positive.
Since you actually took the time to work on your chart, (I trust you) I’ll show you what mine looked like within the hour. Check out my chart:
Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. The attitude you carry reflects on your appearance and overall demeanor. I’ve met some people who were very good at hiding their feelings, however their body language and their eyes always gave them away. When you consciously decide to shift to the realm of positive feelings and thoughts, you start to affect those around you. Most people do not realize that they have the power to control their own world. YOU can decide if you want this person to bring you down or not.
Have you ever experienced the following:
A client of yours complains day after day and soon you find yourself doing the same thing after interacting around that client? What about hanging around a positive client? Do you find yourself admittedly invigorating. Plus, the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energized by this type of attitude.
It’s the basic domino effect.
Negative thoughts on the other hand have a sapping effect on other people. The dark void likes to hover over the light of the human soul and drain as much energy as it can. It’s akin to that of when the black hole eats a star. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can cast a shadow on the purpose of your spiritual missing. The negativity stymies your growth and prevents you from sharing your light with others.
We can also define attitude as the way of looking at the world. You see the world as YOU are. So, if you choose to focus on the negative things in your world, then you will attract more of that negativity. For example, if you feel that you will never publish your book, or attract amazing clients to your business, or you do not have credibility in your field.
However, if you choose to focus on the positive things in your world, then you will attract positivity. For example, if you think you’re going to meet amazing clients on your journey, then amazing clients will come your way. If you do get clients that are negative, then you can always refer them to a person that would be a better fit and change that negative into a positive.
List 3 things you feel good about in your business:
You have quite a bit to gain from a remaining in the positive light. Studies have shown that a positive attitude promotes better health, elevated connections to the spirit, and completing spiritual missions.
Those with this kind of attitude also have more friends and attracts more people to your business. Those who are able to have a positive attitude are better equipped to handle stressful situations. One specific study by Diener and Chan titled: Happy People Live Longer: Subjective Well-Being Contributes to Health and Longevity, highlights the effects of being positive.
If you want to have a positive attitude, you have to feature healthy thoughts. Sometimes maintaining positive thoughts is quite difficult because our society thrives on bad stuff happening to others. This is one of the biggest reasons why I dropped Cable. The idea of watching reality shows is nauseating.
If you want a healthier outlook in life and a thriving business, you need to think happy thoughts and hear happy events. This is not to say that having a negative thought is going to make you a bad person. It is also not to say that hearing negative things will diminish you as an individual. There are times to feel sad as this is a normal human emotion. The trick is not to stay in that frame of mind for a long period of time or be around negative people or events.
So, what can you do? Well, for starters, you could see a funny movie, you could visit the planetarium, spend some time writing a book for your business, plan time to focus on the things going right in your business, send thank you notes to your amazing clients, and more. All these activities fill you with positive stimuli, which in turn promotes positive attitude. Remember, happiness is contagious.
While I wrote this piece, I could not refrain from singing this song:
