The Hermit: This card suggests the seeker take a journey within to do a bit of soul searching. In the book, Aaron was forced away from his home in Washington State. His counselor suggested he return to his childhood home in a remote place in Arkansas to confront his issues. When he returns, the house sits alone at the end of the street. Nothing is as he remembers. As he tries to refurbish the home, a constant swarm of starlings come through the home. Aaron tries to make sense of this oddity.
Five of Pentacles: This card suggests that people are out in the cold and down in their luck. In the book, Aaron is estranged from his house and he starts to see things. Is his mind playing tricks on him. He thinks he can go back home, but he remembers that his wife no longer wants him. He struggles to battle whatever is in the house as well as his own personal demons and addictions.
When he goes to town, a rumor floats around that the house is haunted and no one dares to go near it. Aaron chalks it up to rumors, but has an eerie feeling there might be truth to those words.
The Chariot Reversed: This card indicates difficulty in maintaining focus and stamina. In the book, the sinister pull of the house and the appearance of the bird man rattles Aaron. The battle is long and Aaron is on the verge of giving up his focus on refurbishing the house. The alcohol, the drugs, the bird man, and the growing suspicion that his dead son has come back wear at him. Rather than reveal the unexpected ending, I’d love to hear your take on the card in relation to the ending.
