Something to ponder for the week — Discipline.
When I hear the word “discipline”, many different images come to mind: school, a trade, and/or a focus. In this instance, the spot light is on the ability for a person to develop laser focus on a goal and then take the steps to follow through until completion.
In modern times, some people find it hard to discipline themselves to complete a project. Our world is filled with a lot of amazing distractions. Who doesn’t check their social media feed to see if a response has been made? What about a quick game of conquering a village? Let’s not forget the cute birds outside that flitter from tree to tree.
Okay, that’s great, but I do have a bit of discipline….
I find, in my daily observations, that if something is important enough, you will have the discipline to do it. If a person did not finish a project, it doesn’t mean that they were lazy or scatterbrained. It means that the passion wasn’t there. The person didn’t have the burning passion to complete the project and they were lured in with another bright and shiny object. This is a regular occurrence among some of my students. There are four kinds of students, those who:
- turn in their work early
- turn in their work on time
- turn in their work late
- never turn in their work
Students are a microcosm and reflection of the world.
Why does this happen?
Jumping in too quickly. This is prevalent when a person has a great idea and then acts quickly on it without really looking at the whole picture. If you get a fantastic idea, write it down. This idea came to you for a reason. You are the best person for the job. Now become a better person and step back so you can create a tangible plan as to how to get that great idea into action from start to finish!
What can I do?
Create a list, set a time to get your tasks done, and do it!
