Spiritual leeches exist all around you.  At one time or another you were a spiritual leech.  When you’re scared, you come from a place of fear.  When you’re angry, you come from a place of fear.  What happens is when you experience negative emotions, there is a sense of lack.  Your spiritual tank is running low on spiritual energy.  As a resort, the natural instinct is to reach out to a friend and talk it out.  During that “talking it out”, the positive energy source (your friend) transfers to the low energy sources (you).

After the conversation or venting session is over, you feel good because you have leeched off the positive energy from your friend.  Meanwhile, you friend is exhausted and needs to take a rest.

As a high school teacher, I work with teenagers.  Teenagers are absolutely wonderful to work with.  They go through a wide range of emotions within a 10 minute period.  One minute they are over the moon about their grade.  The next minute they are fuming that someone placed a mean picture of them on Instagram.  My students come to me to talk about their problems and then, they walk away feeling better that they had someone to talk to.

On the college front, the students are pretty even keeled, but some of them do have personal issues.  A few of my students try to talk to me about their problems, but I find that they like to sort out their issues on their own.  It’s interesting to watch their energy shift as they go through their text messages or rush to take the call they’ve been waiting for.

By having a reverence for life, we enter into a spiritual relation with the world.  By practicing reverence for live we become good, deep, and alive. ~ Albert Schweitzer

Whether it is a teenager asking you to listen as they vent an issue or a college student who has a personal crisis at home, they draw your energy away from you —  towards themselves.  Some people intentionally do this and other people unknowingly do this.  Either way, it’s important that you protect yourself from spiritual leeches.

We are all made of light and you need to be at maximum capacity to do our spiritual work.  If you work with the public in any way, this is especially important.  You’re important and in order for you to work at your maximum level, you must be fueled by your light.  If that is low, then it’s harder for you to stay tuned to the environment around you.

For example, if your car gas light flashed on your dashboard, you’d be concerned.  When that oil light comes on t, the instruction book recommends that you turn the car off right away and/or get it to the shop right away.  For those who are a bit more daring and decide to take matters in their own hands, they go and add oil.  I am not that kind of person.  I prefer to allow the professional to handle this.

Your spiritual light is important.  This is how you stay connected to the spirit and to your higher self.  Those in the spiritual world guide you to your destiny. ~ Melissa Halstead

When you allow people to take from you, they leave small deposits of themselves, like a spiritual fingerprint on you, and even when they are not connected to you, they can still pull from you.  This allows you to remain open to their illnesses and spiritual issues.  It’s important that you protect yourself from that.  After all, you really don’t want to take on the health issues of other people.  You’ve got enough of your own issues to worry about.

Here are 3 ways you can protect yourself from spiritual leeches:

Envision a full length mirror facing away from you.

When you envision a full length mirror facing away from you, it causes the energy wavelengths to refract in another direction.  The intent here is not to cause the energy to bounce back to the person, but rather towards the ground.  This forces them to pull from the energy of the Earth, which is more potent than any human being.

For example: when I am working with my clients, there are some that lean on me a bit too strongly in the spiritual sense.  I can feel them drawing from me and this is not ideal.  Rather than lock myself in a dark cave somewhere, I gently place a mental full length mirror facing away from me in between the person and myself.  I am careful to create the mirror in a discrete way as to not cause the other person to become uncomfortable.  People can feel when there is a barrier between you and them, so make it subtle.

Light a healing candle, think healing thoughts, and say a prayer.

Candles carry energy in the color and the flame.  More can be learned here and here.  Send the person loving thoughts and say a small prayer as the candle burns.  Our words have intent and power.  The main purpose of the candle, the healing thoughts, and prayers is to empower the person so they no longer have to draw energy from people.

Ground yourself and give yourself a lot of self-love.

After my work with oracles and/or people, it is essential that I ground myself.  Reading oracles takes a lot out of you because I have to tap into the energy field of the world around me and translate it.  There was an instance where the room was filled with spirits and my chest felt as if it was in a vise.  I had to step outside, take my shoes off, and stand on the grass for 20 minutes.  Against, my better judgment I went and finished the reading because the message needed to be shared.

It’s okay to want to help people heal from their hurts.  It’s not okay to leave yourself drained so you cannot help others.
